Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) is a camera-based forward lighting function defined in UN Regulation No.149 and SAE J3069 as a dynamically adaptive high-beam system. It uses segmented or pixelated light sources (matrix LED, pixel/Micro-LED,) together with an ECU and dedicated driver ICs to modulate the high-beam distribution in real time. Individual segments or pixels are dimmed or switched off in the direction of oncoming or preceding vehicles while the surrounding area remains illuminated, thereby maintaining maximum viewing distance without causing glare. Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) is an advanced headlighting technology that replaces the traditional "either high beam or low beam" logic with a continuously adaptable driving beam. In essence, ADB is a long-range forward-lighting function that dynamically adapts its beam pattern to the presence and position of oncoming and preceding vehicles, so that the driver can enjoy near high-beam visibility most of the time without causing glare or discomfort to other road users. Instead of simply switching from high to low beam, the system uses a forward camera to detect other vehicles' headlamps and tail lamps (and sometimes pedestrians or cyclists), then automatically dims or blocks only the segments of the beam that would shine directly into their eyes, while keeping high-intensity illumination on the rest of the road.
Technically, ADB is implemented through a combination of sensors, software algorithms and specialised headlamp hardware. A forward-facing camera and associated ECU identify light sources and objects in real time; the lighting ECU then calculates an appropriate beam shape and controls either a mechanical shading element or, more commonly today, a matrix / segmented LED array. When another vehicle is detected, the ECU generates a "shadow" or dark zone in the driving beam over that vehicle's position, while preserving upper-beam intensity elsewhere. High-definition ADB systems push this concept further by using many more controllable pixels, enabling very fine sculpting of the beam, better illumination of pedestrians and road edges, and reduced reflections from traffic signs—all while protecting both human drivers and on-board sensors from excessive glare.
